Getting Started

What does SunEyed calculate?

SunEyed estimates how much energy your solar panels would generate, how much money you would save on your electricity bill each year, and how long it would take to recover your installation cost (break-even / payback period). Calculations are based on real solar radiation data from over 40,000 weather stations worldwide.

Do I need to create an account?

No. SunEyed requires no sign-up, no email address, and no login. All your analysis data is stored locally on your device.

Does the app work offline?

Yes. Once the app has loaded your local weather station data, all calculations run entirely on your device. An internet connection is only used to sync anonymous usage statistics and to load the solar installer list.

Solar Calculations

How accurate are the savings estimates?

The estimates are based on NASA and NOAA solar radiation data for the nearest weather station to your location, combined with your actual electricity usage and rate. Results are a good approximation for planning purposes. Actual savings will vary based on shading, panel degradation over time, future electricity rate changes, and installer-specific factors.

Why is my annual production lower than I expected?

Common reasons include: roof orientation (south-facing panels in the northern hemisphere produce the most), roof slope, panel efficiency, system losses, and shading from trees or other obstructions. Use the "Map Obstructions" feature in the panel editor to trace nearby obstructions on the sun path chart.

What is "net metering" and which option should I choose?

Net metering is how your utility credits you for excess solar energy you export to the grid. Monthly settlement means each month is calculated independently — summer surplus doesn't offset winter deficit. Annual settlement means your utility banks summer credits and applies them to winter bills. Check with your utility to find out which applies to you.

What does "Solar Access" percentage mean?

Solar Access is the fraction of available sunlight that actually reaches your panels after accounting for obstructions you have mapped (trees, chimneys, neighboring buildings). 100% means no obstructions. A lower percentage reduces your production estimate proportionally.

Obstruction Mapping

How do I map obstructions?

Go to the Panel Group editor → Map Obstructions. You have two modes: Sensor (point the top edge of your phone at the obstruction skyline) and Camera (use the rear camera viewfinder to aim at obstructions). In both modes, tap START, sweep slowly from left to right along the obstruction's outline, then tap STOP. The obstruction will appear as a shaded area on the sun path chart.

Why does the app need camera access?

The camera is used only in Camera mode of the obstruction mapping feature. The live viewfinder helps you visually align the crosshair with a tree or rooftop edge. The camera feed is never recorded, saved, or sent anywhere.

Why does the app need location access?

Location is used to find the nearest solar weather station in our database, which provides the monthly solar radiation values used in your calculations. Without location, the app cannot retrieve accurate local solar data.

Commercial License

What is the commercial license?

The commercial license ($99.99/year) is for professionals who use SunEyed as a tool for client work — solar installers, energy auditors, or real estate agents. It unlocks features designed for professional use. Private homeowners evaluating their own roof can use SunEyed for free.

How do I cancel my commercial subscription?

Open the Settings app on your iPhone → [your name] → Subscriptions → SunEyed → Cancel Subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.

Data & Privacy

What data does SunEyed collect?

SunEyed collects anonymous usage statistics (session count, last known location, app version) via Firebase. Your electricity usage, panel configuration, and analysis results are stored only on your device and are never transmitted. See our full Privacy Policy for details.

How do I delete my data?

Your local analysis data is deleted when you uninstall the app. To request deletion of your anonymous usage record from our servers, email [email protected] with the subject "Data deletion request." We will process it within 30 days.
